The Last Use of the Statues

CAMPOLI, Mulazzo (MS)

Most of the stelae-statues were found within the ground and abandoned near the modern towns (Taponecco), under the basement of the churches (Sorano) or within the woods of the mountains (Pontevecchio, Filetto).
Nevertheless in some cases the statues were found in the modern period and used by the local people as construction material (Codiponte, Gigliana) or as decorative elements on the front of buildings (Campoli) and on the top of springs and fountains (Malgrate IV, Reusa).

This last type of use seems to testify that, when the ideological iconoclastic need has been estinguished, the buried cultural roots of the local people arose again and an inconscious respect returned for these monuments which are mute witnesses of old cultures and tradictions.
