Cos'è
Secondo la tradizione a Pisa il 25 marzo ricorre il Capodanno in stile pisano, che segna l'arrivo del nuovo anno in occasione dell'Annunciazione alla Vergine Maria dell'incarnazione di Gesù. L’ingresso nel nuovo anno avviene esattamente quando in Cattedrale un raggio di sole da una finestra della navata centrale illumina dalla parte opposta una mensolina a forma di uovo sul pilastro accanto al celebre pergamo di Giovanni Pisano. La cerimonia è preceduta da un corteo storico.

New Year in the Pisan Style
On March 25th Pisa welcomes the new year 9 months ahead of the rest of the world. The city prepares to celebrate the New Year in the Pisan Style with various events, culminating in a religious service at the Cathedral, where at 12 o’clock exactly a ray of sunshine, penetrating from a round window in the central nave, will illuminate a marble egg on a shelf.
“For the greater glory of God and invoking the intercession of Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Ranieri, our Patron, we welcome the year 2026!”. This ritual phrase will greet the new year in the Cathedral, dedicated to the Madonna Assunta. Since the 10th century, in fact, the Pisans made the beginning of the year coincide with the Annunciation (and therefore the Incarnation of Jesus), 9 months prior to December 25th. Thus the Pisan Year ab Incarnatione Domini (or Christi) was obtained.
The earliest known document using the Pisan calendar dates back to 985 A. D. This date of the beginning of the year remained in force for centuries also in the lands belonging to the Republic of Pisa: the coast between Portovenere and Civitavecchia, Gorgona, Capraia, Elba, Pianosa, Corsica, Sardinia, the Balearics, Gaeta, Reggio Calabria, Tropea, Lipari, Trapani, Mazara, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, the city of Azov (in the Sea of the same name, at the mouth of the Don River) and Constantinople, where the Pisans were the only Westerners who could settle, together with the Venetians.
The Pisan Style New Year was observed until November 20th 1749, when Grand Duke Francis I of Lorraine decreed that all Tuscan territories should adopt the Gregorian calendar, beginning January 1st 1750. Therefore, Pisa also had to conform to the use of the Gregorian calendar. Only in the 1980s, people started talking about this anniversary again and since then New Year's Eve has returned to be celebrated with cultural and convivial initiatives that precede it.
On the 25th a historical parade of the Maritime Republic crosses the city until it proceeds to the Piazza dei Miracoli and then enters the Cathedral to await the ray of sunshine that heralds the arrival of the new year, nine months ahead of the rest of the world.
