Chiesa
di San Sisto
It was consecrated in 1133,
but had already been used as a seat of the most important notarial deeds
of the town of Pisa. The stone structure has a nave and two aisles
covered by a saddle roof; the façade is divided in three parts by
pilasters, a bifora and by little arches running along the roof,
including the typical decorations with Islamic ceramic basins from the
XI-XII century (imitations; the original ones are kept in the Museum of
San Matteo). The side-walls and the modern bell tower are opened by
windows with one light. The interior is parted by colonnades with Roman
capitals; it contains an Arabian tombstone, a copy of a "Madonna
with Child" from the XIV century and the rudder of a Pisan boat (XIV-XV
century). |
