Chiesa di San Paolo a Ripa d'Arno
Founded around 925, it is
documented since 1032; the convent since 1147.From 1092 it was the see
of the Vallombrosani monks. In the middle of the XII century it was
enlarged with shapes similar to the ones of the contemporaneous Duomo.
It has an apsidal Latin cross plan with nave and two aisles and a cupola
on the intersection of the transept. In the bichrome marble rows
covering are re-used Roman marbles. The saddle roof façade, with
pilasters, blind arches, marble tarsias and three rows of loggias, with
sculpted string-course frames, was completed by Giovanni Pisano in the
XIV century. Inside, is a Roman sarcophagus from the IV century used as
a medieval tomb; "Crucifix" on wood from the XIII century;
frescoes by Buffalmacco and "Madonna with Child and Saints" by
Turino Vanni (XIV century).
Cappella di Sant'Agata
The chapel was built around
1063 by the monks of the church of San Paolo a Ripa d’Arno to which it
was linked by medieval buildings demolished after the W.W.II. It has an
octagonal structure with pilasters, arches incorporating windows with
three lights, garret arches and pyramidal covering. Inside are kept
remains of mural decorations from the XII century. |
