Chiesa
di San Paolo all’Orto
Documented since 1086, it was
a priory from the XII century and was used by the Augustinian nuns from
the XV century. The façade, with the typical Pisan bichrome marble row
covering, is parted by five arcades with lozenges, tarsias and capitals
sculpted by Biduino (end of the XII century). The bell tower, restored
several times, can be dated back to the XVII century. In the nave and
two aisle interior, which was shortened, destroying the apse in the XV
century, can be found remains of sinopias and frescoes from the XII-XIII
century and decorations made with fresco and stucco from the XVIII
century. Deconsecrated, it is now used for cultural purposes. |
