Chiesa
di San Nicola
It has been mentioned with
the annexed convent since 1097. Between 1297 and 1313 it was widened by
the Augustinians, probably by Giovanni Pisano (east side). The façade
has pilasters, blind arches and lozenges and is decorated by XII century
tarsias. The original octagonal bell tower, with a little loggia and an
interior winding staircase, dates back to the second half of the XIII
century. It was restored in the XVII century adding the altars and the
chapel of the Sacramento (Matteo Nigetti, 1614). It keeps paintings on
wood ("Madonna with Child" by Francesco Traini from the XIV
century and "San Nicola Saves Pisa from the Plague" from the
XV century), paintings by Maruscelli and Bilivert and wooden sculptures
from the XIV-XV centuries ("Crucifix" by Giovanni Pisano,
"Madonna with Child" by Nino Pisano, "Annunciated"
by Francesco di Valdambrino). |
