Chiesa
di San Michele in Borgo
The church, together with
the monastery, belonging first to the Benedictine monks and from the XII
century to the Camaldolesi, was built around 1016 and restored several
times. The lower part of the façade is from the XIII century, whereas
the upper part with little loggias is from the XIV century, as well as
the tabernacle with the "Madonna with Child, Angels and the Abbot
Making an Offering" by Lupo di Francesco (a copy: the original one
is in the Museum of San Matteo). On the façade there are some XVII
century inscriptions for the election of the University’s rector. The
monumental interior with nave and two aisles keeps a Crucifix attributed
to Nino Pisano (XIV century), paintings by Matteo Rosselli ("Conception"),
by Baccio Lomi ("Madonna with Child and Saints"), by Aurelio
Lomi ("Virtue"), by Giuseppe Melani ("Nativity") and
remains of frescoes (XIII and XVIII centuries). |
