Chiesa
di San Matteo
The church was rebuilt on a
pre-existing little church with three apses when the Benedictine nuns’
convent was founded in 1027. It was enlarged in the XII century (remains
can be found in a side of the façade, in a side wall and in the bell
tower) and in the XIII century (in the Museum, remains of a presbytery
area with nave and two aisles), whereas the convent incorporates
buildings previously separated in a quadrilateral complex surrounding
the courtyard. The present nave was restored in the XVII century; the façade
dates back to 1610. In the XVIII century the interior was decorated with
works by Giuseppe and Francesco Melani, with rich Baroque frescoes, with
the "Glory of Saint Matthew" in the vault and "Stories of
Saint Matthew’s Life" by Sebastiano Conca, Francesco Trevisani
and Jacopo Zoboli. On the altar, "Crucifix" on woodfrom the
XIII century. |
