Chiesa
di San Martino
Mentioned since 1067, it was
the see of the Augustinian canonical monks. It was rebuilt in 1331 but
the upper part of the façade is from 1610. The remains of the bell
tower are visible in the XVI century side porch. The saddle covered nave
is decorated from the outside with pilasters and little arches with
Pisan ceramic basins (copies: the original ones are kept in the Museum
of San Matteo). On the portal, a copy of the marble work with
"Saint Martin and the Poor" by Andrea Pisano (XIV century)
kept inside. The rich interior was restored in the XVII century and
contains a Crucifix on wood by Enrico di Tedice (XIII century); XIV
century frescoes by Giovanni di Nicola and Cecco di Pietro; paintings by
the Melani bros., Ligozzi, Riminaldi, Passignano; sculptures by Civitali,
Vaccà and Cibei. |
