Chiesa
di Santa Cecilia
Founded in 1103 by the
Camaldolesi monks, it was consecrated in 1107 and completed during the
XIII century. The building is made of bricks with a stone basement; the
nave is covered by a saddle roof and decorated by a window with two
lights in the façade and by garret arches incorporating Islamic and
Pisan ceramic basins from the XIII century (copies: the original ones
are kept in the Museum of San Matteo). The brick bell tower (1236) with
monoforas suspended on a column inside is unusual. It was almost totally
rebuilt after the damages from World War II. Inside is kept a "Martyrdom
of Saint Cecilia" by Ventura Salimbeni (1607). |
