Chiesa
di Sant’Andrea Forisportam
It is documented since 1104
and its name comes from its position outside the early-medieval town
walls’ door. The structure, made of stones, has a nave and two aisles
covered by a saddle roof. The façade is parted by three portals and by
arcades divided by pilasters and including lozenges and round windows;
the side walls are decorated by little arches and by Islamic ceramic
basins from the XI-XII century (imitations; the original ones are kept
in the Museum of San Matteo), as for the modern bell tower. Inside,
restored in the XIX century, are kept columns with reused Roman capitals
and others linked to the culture of Guglielmo. Deconsecrated, it is now
used for theatrical activities. |
