Chiesa
di Santa Maria del Carmine
Built by the Carmelites in
1324-1328, it was enriched with private chapels and imposing altars,
among which the one containing the polyptych by Masaccio (1425), a part
of which is kept at the Museum of San Matteo. Enlarged in the XVI-XVII
century, it preserved the big aisleless structure saddle roof covered,
visible from a side and the back. The façade is from 1835; in the
niches the statues of "Saint Elia" and of "Saint John the
Baptist" (1697), made by artists from Carrara, were reused. The
imposing interior keeps an organ by Andrea Ravani from 1613 and
monumental Baroque altars with paintings by Baccio and Aurelio Lomi,
Santi di Tito, Alessandro Allori, Francesco Curradi, Andrea Boscoli. In
the sacristy, are remains of XIV century frescoes. |
