The Excellence in Art and Knowledge of Pisa in the XIII Century
A marble intarsia in a lunette under the arch of the original portal of the church of San Nicola in Pisa provides the opportunity to appreciate the level of cultural excellence achieved by the Maritime Republic at the height of its power during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Time had made indecipherable, for centuries, the decoration of the lunette, obscuring the brilliant intuitions that gave birth to a school of thought that would overturn the medieval worldview and make Pisa the cradle of modern scientific thought. The message inscribed for posterity in the lunette has re-emerged in all its detail thanks to its recent restoration, which brought the marble back to its original splendour.
The original investigation initiated by Pietro Armienti, of the Department of Geosciences of the University of Pisa, resulted in two separate publications on the interpretation of the unusual lunette decoration:
Albano A., The Fibonacci Sequence and the Golden Section in a Lunette Decoration of the Medieval Church of San Nicola in Pisa, Territori della Cultura, 21, 48-59, ottobre 2015. The paper can be downloaded from the attachments section (box ALLEGATI).
Armienti P., The Medieval Roots of Modern Scientific Thought. A Fibonacci Abacus on the Facade of the Church of San Nicola in Pisa, Journal of Cultural Heritage, 17, 1-6, January-February 2016. The paper can be downloaded from the attachments section (box ALLEGATI).
Recently there was a presentation with the title "The Excellence in Art and Knowledge in Pisa of the XIII century. The abacus of San Nicola: a testimony emerged from oblivion'', given at Pisa City Library on 18 February 2016, explaining the importance of the lunette decoration, in art history, philosophy and mathematics from different points of view:
