Brief information about GAP

Gruppo Archeologico Pisano (GAP) is a volunteers association operating in Pisa from 1970 in the field of cultural heritage, archaeology in particular. It belongs to the national association Gruppi Archeologici d'Italia and to the European Forum of the Heritage Associations.
GAP operates in collaboration with the regional auctorities for archaeology (Soprintendenza Archeologica della Toscana) and with the local government in the research, recording and survey of archaeological heritage in Pisa and in its countryside.
The activities of the association include:
  • Collaboration in town and in countryside archaeological excavations.
  • Organisation of public exibitions and lectures about the local cultural heritage [see the LOGO (.GIF 28 KB) of the exibition Volunteer Middle Age concerning some contributions of the archaeological groups to medieval archaeology].
  • Didactical activities in the schools of Pisa and San Giuliano Terme.
  • Archaeological survey of the mountains near Pisa (Monti Pisani).
  • Virtual Museums implementation concerning archaeological and artistic heritage of Tuscany (see the link of Virtual Museums)
In particular, from 1988, GAP is engaged in the stratigraphic excavations of the fortified etruscan and early medieval settlement of MONTE CASTELLARE (Asciano, Pisa) directed by prof. A.Maggiani of the University of Venice. Every year in summer GAP organises a field school, open to voluteers, for the excavations in this site.
