Gruppo
Archeologico Pisano (GAP) is a volunteers association operating
in Pisa from 1970 in the field of cultural heritage, archaeology
in particular. It belongs to the national association Gruppi
Archeologici d'Italia and
to the European Forum of the Heritage Associations. GAP
operates in collaboration with the regional auctorities for
archaeology (Soprintendenza Archeologica della Toscana) and with
the local government in the research, recording and survey of
archaeological heritage in Pisa and in its countryside. The
activities of the association include:
Collaboration
in town and in countryside archaeological excavations.
Organisation
of public exibitions and lectures about the local cultural
heritage [see the LOGO (.GIF 28 KB) of
the exibition Volunteer Middle Age concerning some contributions
of the archaeological groups to medieval archaeology].
Didactical
activities in the schools of Pisa and San Giuliano Terme.
Archaeological
survey of the mountains near Pisa (Monti Pisani).
Virtual
Museums implementation concerning archaeological and artistic
heritage of Tuscany (see the link of Virtual Museums)
In
particular, from 1988, GAP is engaged in the stratigraphic
excavations of the fortified etruscan and early medieval
settlement of MONTE CASTELLARE (Asciano, Pisa) directed by prof.
A.Maggiani of the University of Venice. Every year in summer GAP
organises a field school, open to voluteers, for the excavations
in this site.
