The
twinning pact between Pisa and Gerico was signed in the 2000 to
consolidate the exchange and cooperation between two historically
important towns. Gerico, in fact, has got an extraordinary cultural
relief: recent excavations have shown that it is the oldest urban
settlement of the world. Famous for the biblical tale concerning the
destruction of its walls, the town represents an oasis of green in the
desert. The plantations of palms, roses and oranges, fed by the waters
of the river Jordan and from the numerous underground affluents from the
Central Mountains, characterize its landscape since the most ancient
times. The twinning pact between Pisa and Gerico does not run out in the
cultural world but fit into the project of the Tuscan Region to
establish a relationship of pacific cohabitation and cooperation between
Israel and Palestine.
